The troubles of the War Between the States come home to a little plantation girl nicknamed Virgie when her father is arrested and charged with espionage against the Yankees.

In The Littlest Rebel, the basis of the classic Shirley Temple movie, there's a message of familial love and perseverance as well as a celebration of the Old South's genteel ways

“The appeal of children on the stage is not easy to resist; and it is to the very charming acting of a little girl named Juliet Shelby that the success of Mr. Edward Peple’s old fashioned and pleasing melodrama, called ‘The Littlest Rebel,’ must mainly be ascribed. Set in Virginia in the last year of the Civil War….Mr. Peple is to be congratulated on writing a Civil War play in which there is neither a Northern officer in love with a Southern girl nor a Southern officer in love with a Northern girl. ‘The Littlest Rebel’ is, of course, a sentimental composition; but Mr. Peple shows a very pretty tact in setting forth that sweet, alluring sentiment which makes us follow easily the leading of a little child.” -Everybody's Magazine, Volume 26, 1912

“The scene of this exquisite little masterpiece is laid in the South during the Civil War. Here the North and South meet, and “Virgie” stands between them; a rare little heroine. There is a pathos and humor in this story that will be appreciated by every reader. It is truly a book for young and old. Mr. Peple has written a story that is a joy to all, and “Virgie” will be the most talked about young lady of the season.” -Publishers Weekly

The Littlest Rebel, 1935 film

This is set on a cotton plantation in the Antebellum South. There is a party in a mansion. A rider rushes in to tell about the attack on Fort Sumter! War is on, the men have to report with sidearms. The party is ended. War is about killing men for whatever reason. The Virginians ride off dressed in the gray of their militia uniforms. The Yankees ride up. Miss Virgie is told to mind her manners by a Yankee officer. Her Daddy can’t come to visit because the Yankees control their land. But he arrives in daylight to visit his family. “I miss you, Daddy” says his daughter. Then she sings to him. Her Daddy is scouting General Sheridan’s Army. But the Yankees are coming! They must hide their food and valuables! The Yankees walk into the house and search the house. They are looking for a Rebel spy. They find a secret panel to a hidden room. Virgie’s disguise is uncovered! There is a struggle, her Mom falls down the stairs. The General orders these soldiers lashed and other posted to search for that scout.

The War continues. Cannon fire tells of a battle. Uncle Billie brings bad news from home. Virgie’s father returns. Their mansion was burned down, the slaves fled to freedom. Master Carey returns to visit his ailing wife; she coughs. She will never suffer or be ill again. The Yankees are coming! Carey hides in the attic. There is a tap dance for entertainment. Virgie tells her story. Her Mommy went away. But the Yankee officer Colonel Morrison isn’t fooled! He offers a deal, a pass through Union lines. But there is danger if Carey is caught in a Yankee uniform. There is a challenge when a Sergeant recognizes Virgie! There is a chase, Carey is caught. He is condemned. Colonel Morrison is condemned as well. The Captain sends Uncle Billie on an errand, Virgie goes along. Can they earn the money for a railroad fare? They dance and collect. They visit a judge then the President, who shakes Uncle Billie’s hand. Virgie tells what happened. “You mustn’t cry.” The President signs a pardon. It ends with Virgie singing the men behind bars. A happy ending for some. Few history books tell about President Lincoln’s policy of reducing death penalties from Courts-Martial.

This is not a historical story but a sentimental one. It succeeds on that level. “Why can’t we all be friends?” Because economics and politics drive human behavior. War is about loot, to get it or to keep it. Was this portrayal of life in the antebellum South realistic? Only if it represents a slice of life in those times; a lot has been left out. Perhaps it was meant to remind Depression era people that a war was worse? In time America would enter WW II, one effect was to end the Great Depression. This was followed by the prosperity of the 1950's and 1960's, the best of times for most Americans. This changed in 1969 (“The Looting of America”). The mechanization of agriculture reduced the need for human labor, resulting in a migration out of the South (“The Grapes of Wrath”). But later the sending of jobs offshore created new problems for most Americans.
This is a charming book with the overriding messages of peace and the virtues of humanity trumping the harsh requirements of war. The message is made clear by a nice poem included at the end of the book, written by the author, and titled "Peace." The movie by the same name starring Shirley Temple follows the book fairly closely, however, there are a few key differences. Namely, in the book it is General Grant whom Virgie beseeches for clemency on behalf of her father and the yankee colonel, while in the movie it is Abraham Lincoln. However, the character of Virgie is very charmingly portrayed in the book as it is in the movie and that is one of the strong points of the novel. The story centers around a father trying to get his daughter safely out of harm's way during war times. He's wanted by the yankees for being a spy and is caught by one them. However, the colonel also has a daughter Virgie's age and he writes out a pass for them to get across the lines, a move which is contrary to the demands of war. Lest I spoil the entire plot line, let it suffice that Virgie in the book, makes everything right. Much like Shirley Temple in the movie. There are times where some of the dialogue is written in the dialect of the era, so it makes more sense when sounded out. However, the book is a charming one. And the story well crafted. Included throughout the book are some pictures from the movie starring Shirley Temple. And it is just a most pleasant read.
